Conference presentation – ‘World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2016’

The Aged Care Complaints Commissioner, Rae Lamb, presented at the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2016 Conference in Adelaide today. This event was hosted by the Aged Rights Advocacy Service Adelaide. You can read the speech on our Speeches and Presentations page.

Ms Lamb discussed a report by the Australian Institute of Family Studies that outlined “that elder abuse involves the physical, emotional, sexual or financial abuse or neglect of an older person by another person in a position of trust.”
“…If we can resolve issues for people receiving care, it will not only lead to better care for them and other vulnerable people, it will also inspire trust that speaking up is worthwhile. said Ms Lamb. “Speaking up promotes awareness – and this is a really powerful weapon in the fight against elder abuse.”

“So I would encourage people who have concerns about aged care and services who cannot address these themselves, to approach an advocate, or come to us to discuss how we may be able to help them. We can discuss ways to address any fears or concerns you may have.”
